Fred Gray: A Legacy of Justice, A Future of Change
On July 7, 2022, Attorney Fred D. Gray received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joseph P. Biden, marking a historic moment for an Alabama lawyer whose 70-year legal career epitomizes the fight for equal justice. This award, the nation’s highest civilian honor, celebrates Mr. Gray’s relentless pursuit to dismantle segregation—a mission he embarked on as a young attorney committed to “destroying everything segregated he could find.”
Few attorneys will ever represent leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or activists like Mrs. Rosa Parks. Few will alter the course of history through landmark civil rights cases. And few possess the tenacity and grace of Fred Gray.
Be Part of the Fight for Justice: Join the Gray Institute Partners
Through his groundbreaking work, Fred Gray has paved the way for others to champion justice and equality. Now, you can stand alongside him by supporting the Fred Gray Institute for Human and Civil Rights. As a Gray Institute Partner, you’ll help carry forward his charge to “Keep pushing, keep going, until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.’’
The Gray Institute brings together the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center (also known as the Tuskegee History Center) with other vital initiatives. For over 26 years, the Tuskegee History Center has educated thousands on the impact of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and regional civil rights victories that shaped national policy.
As a Gray Institute Partner, you’ll join a movement that transcends history by actively advancing human and civil rights through:
Thoughtful Discourse: Facilitating critical conversations on today’s most pressing social issues.
Research with Practical Outcomes: Leading civil rights advancements with academic rigor, led by Fred Gray Fellows.
Educational Outreach: Reaching students across the nation to inspire the next generation of advocates.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with organizations and institutions to expand the civil rights agenda.
Community Revitalization: Working to rejuvenate Tuskegee and the Central Alabama region.
The Gray Institute: Transforming Law and Practical Outcomes
The Gray Institute will take its place among the national civil rights organizations but will uniquely build on the foundational principles of Fred Gray’s legal work and activism through educating, convening, collaborating, regional rejuvenation, and a robust Tuskegee History Center. The work will move to practical outcomes, especially as an outgrowth of his life’s work in medical racism, voting rights, and equal access to quality education.

Attorney Gray recently said, “We have made great strides in the struggle for equal justice for all. But much work remains to be done. When I first began to practice civil rights law, I knew I could not do this work alone. As I collaborated in the beginning with Thurgood Marshall and other seasoned legal minds, I am now looking for collaborating partners to advance our work to the next generation.” ~ Fred Gray
